Moola Monsters is a simple system for parents (care giver) to use with their children. The basic premise is for parents to find ways for their children to earn cards, and ways for children to spend their cards. The cards work better than a typical allowance because the children find value in the monster characters. This process will teach children five basic rules of money that will stay with them their whole lives. It will also teach them the joys and consequences of choices; values that are far more reaching than just economics.Remember, be creative, consistent, and have fun. Progress, not perfection, is what is important.
Below are some examples of how to use the cards. You can print this off as a template or come up with your own values to assign to the activities. The important thing is to use them. Please send us your success stories!

Examples:
Create a list of opportunities to earn a card.

*1 card for going to bed on time

*1 card for staying in bed all night

*2 cards for getting good reports from your teacher each day

*1 card for feeding your pet each day

*3 cards for minding manners while out to eat or visiting another's home

What opportunities can you think of…?

Create a list of opportunities for purchasing with your Moola Monsters cards

*15 cards per hour of game console time (i.e. PS3, Wii, Etc.)

*5 cards per junk food

*5 cards for disobeying

*30 cards to buy a new toy (10 dollar value)

*5 cards per hour of cartoons

What opportunities can you think of…?

Bank
Give each child a shoebox in which to keep their cards. This box will be their bank account. The parent functions as the bank, distributing and collecting the cards from the children.
Moola Monsters, LLC, will be offering monster banks for children in the coming months.

Investing

Select a drawer in the house that will be the "investing drawer". Cards contained in the drawer cannot be removed from the drawer, looked at or played with by the child. At the end of the week, add 2 cards to every 1 that has been invested and give those cards to the children.
If your child is not earning their standard cards then the investment does not grow. It grows or loses based on their behavior, like our stock market today.

Tithing or Charity
At church have your child take 10% of their cards out for a tithe. (Use round numbers…so if they have 22 cards, take out 2 for the tithe.) Take the cards to church. At church, place one dollar per card tithe to your local church. Return the tithed cards to your personal stack so that the children can earn them again.
Ask your church if they are Moola Monster partners. If they are, then they may have special programs for Moola Monsters.

moola monsters

We are a product of our __________? That is the age-old question. Are we merely pre-determined by our genetic code or are we actually a product of our environment? This debate will certainly continue for years to come. "Corporate America", however, apparently believes that we are a product of their marketing efforts. This was revealed to me when I realized how many commercials our children are bombarded with in just one hour of cartoons! It is truly amazing--fast-paced, lots of colors and activity, blasting their developing minds at a record pace! There is little wonder that the MTV generation today are massive consumers: we were trained as young children to consume. Clothes, food, games, toys, energy, etc., etc.,...we consume and consume, even when we know, intellectually, that we need to save instead of continuing to spend. We need to break this cycle and begin to re-educate our children!

We must teach our children that they have a life that involves far more than to just be a "consumer." We must teach them that they are inventors, builders, educators--and more. We must teach them that there are consequences for their actions and that good things come to those who wait. They are not doomed to the impulse buy unless we, as parents, do nothing to teach them otherwise. We need to instruct our children for the betterment of their futures and the betterment of our country. As in all things, consistency is crucial in teaching your children these core, life principles.

Moola Monsters was created as a life-system for children. It reaches far beyond just teaching children the principles of money and economics. It teaches vital behavioral skills: delayed gratification, consequences for actions, focusing on a goal, determination, the value of giving/receiving with grace, and much more. These principles are essential to our choices as children, teen-agers and adults.

Pivotal to the Moola Monsters system is the inherent value that children place on the cards themselves. They value the cards because they like the monster images--and, many times, the characteristics that the cards represent.

By using the Moola Monsters’ system, your child will learn the basic principles of life, economics and making wise choices--all without even realizing that they are learning!

Q: How many decks of cards do I need for each child?
A: The general rule is 2-3 decks (22 cards per deck) of cards per child. The number of cards will be dependent on how each family chooses to use them.

Q: Do the cards have specific monetary values assigned to them?
A: No, they don’t. The idea is to teach children principles of cash flow, not how to count money or to make change. Children will learn how to count money in their individual school environments. Simply, place values on the desired opportunities to earn cards or to spend cards, not on the cards themselves.

Q: What is the best way to introduce the cards to our children?
A: Let your children earn some cards as a reward system for a while. Allow them to build a bank account. Once they have developed a bank account of 20-30 cards then begin to introduce ways of spending their cards.

Tip: Bankrupt your children. In the early stages, children spend their cards like crazy. Raise the rates. Let them run out of cards so they can experience what it is like to be broke. It is better to experience this NOW than when they are adults. By doing this, they will learn to value the cards.

Tip: Offer your children a card everyday for reciting the 5 rules of money. As your children use their cards they will make financial mistakes. When they do remind them of which rule of money they broke. This will reinforce the long lasting principles they will need in life.

"My 5 year came to me this morning with a request for a toy. I told him it would be 30 cards. He went and counted his cards and had 8 cards in his bank. He then looked at me and said, “I think Lainy (our dog) is hungry.” He went and filled her dog bowl and earned a card." (Jason from AZ)

"Wow...I've never seen my 6 yr old respond to chores, bedtime and homework like she did for Moola Monsters cards. I created a daily chart & she went through the list to earn as many cards as she could as well as giving some to the church. She never did that for real money!" Click here to see my sample list for my kids. (Cherie from AZ)

"My 7 yr old requested junk food. When I explained it would be 5 cards, he replied, “No, I don’t want spend my cards on that. May I have a banana?” To which I replied, “Sure. Bananas are free." (Jeff from New Mexico)

"Sadie earned her first Moola reward today--we took her to get her ears pierced (like a big girl). She was so excited and we love the life system she is learning. Thanks for your hard work and sharing it with us!" (Rayne)

"I love the cards... however, my nine yr. old daughter and 7 yr old son thought I was nuts at first.  They have been used to playing games on the Wii and the computer whenever they wanted during the summer.  So it was quite an adjustment.  I love the help I get around the house and their excellent behavior while we are out.  Now that they have realized their earning potential the struggle has gotten better.  What about TV watching?  Do your kids pay to watch TV?  While they were learning to earn, TV became a favorite pasttime.  Now they have a surplus of money to spend so I'm  thinking it should cost something to watch TV too!  The three yr old thinks it's really fun too, but I never collect any of his cards even though he keeps earning more.  He does not play any of those things or watch TV.  He just gets into his own kind of trouble all day long." (Mindy from La)

"Moola Monsters is working WONDERS for our 6-year-old. I'm happy to report that this is the first time we've managed to make it to school without either Mommy or Daddy breaking down and yelling.  If the girls make it in the car by 7:35, they get a card!  Whew-hew!  It works!" (Laura from AZ)

"No joke, Elle (5) is now potty training her brother (2) for Moola Monster cards...and it was HER idea. Daaang!" (Erin from AZ)

"My mother took Michael and Matthew to the toy store to buy them a toy. Michael insisted that they could not buy the toy because they did not have their cards. My mother explained to them that this was a gift and this was different. When I came home I also explained to Michael and Matthew the difference between using their cards and a gift from their grandmother. My mom could not believe how disciplined the boys had been. When is the last time you have seen a 5 year-old and a 7 year-old pass up on a toy in order to be responsible to their parents guidelines." (Jason from AZ)

"This week Michael quoted the third rule of money... "If you spend all your money, you will not have any money" ... to his brother. He actually applied the rule by himself to teach his brother to save for something better. It is amazing, they actually understand the rules of money." (Jason from AZ)

"My 3 year old stopped in mid-bite when I told her she would not get her Moola Monsters card...Unbelievable!" (Lisa from AZ)

"This morning about 6:00 am I heard some banging around. I looked up and in came Michael carrying a towel he wanted to hang on the rack. Then he grabbed a pair of my shoes and took them to my closet. He continued to clean my bathroom. I asked Tracy what he was doing. She told me that he saw something he wanted and has decided to clean the whole house to earn enough cards. Apparently he did the same thing yesterday. AWESOME. Rule #4 You have to work hard and smart to earn more money." (Grant from AZ)

"I was a bit apprehensive on how quickly she would pick up the Moola concept--just being 3; however, she completely GETS IT and is starting to learn the Rules of Money--she has memorized 3 and can, also, recite them. Very impressive." (Rayne from TX)

"My son Garrett (6yrs) loves them, makes his bed, brushes his teeth and gets dressed every morning without us telling him to. He invested them last wkend, gives 10% to God and he gave one to "the poor people" this week. I've been telling several parents in my office about them. They are a great teaching tools!" (Chris from MS)
